AGNÈS VARDA’S QUEST FOR ‘ULYSSE’: NAMING THE GUILTY THROUGH IMAGES, MEMORIES AND TIME

Put yet another way, in Ulysse, Varda sets out on quest to construct a film caption for ‘Ulysse’, and she does so by meditating on her own process of creative production through a recollection of images, represented by the photographic stills; memories, her own and those of her models; and, finally, temporalities, by placing her image within a historical lapse.

It’s impossible to remain unmoved by such an affectionate film, not only because of the sympathy that Varda transmits, but because it’s a film that it’s constantly speaking and showing characters who share experiences, and are surprised by the result of the collaboration between the two filmmakers.

JR, joven y enigmático fotógrafo francés que jamás se quita las gafas, logra trabajar un nuevo documental con la maravillosa Agnés Varda, una de las cineastas más queridas por la cinefilia. Juntos realizan una serie de proyectos fotográficos, a modo de intervención, por diversas pequeñas comunidades francesas, donde van recogiendo testimonios, y solicitando a la par retratos, que configuran este Visages Villages, una suerte de road movie de lo real.
