CANNES 2019: THE CORDILLERA OF DREAMS BY PATRICIO GUZMÁN

As it happens with Nostalgia for the light, the exploration of territory allows e opportunity for historical metaphor, to deepen in the recent memory of Chile. The Atacama Desert as geography is used to compare the vastness of facts that remain unlooked, and as a symbol for waiting: when the night arrives, the secrets of the sky are uncovered, and that allows auscultating for constellations. The reconstruction of history always seems to be waiting a celestial phenomenon to reach justice for thousands of victims.

Como pasa con Nostalgia de la luz, la exploración del territorio sirve como oportunidad para la metáfora histórica, para ahondar en la memoria reciente de Chile. El desierto de Atacama como geografía es usado para comparar la vastedad de hechos que se mantienen aún sin investigar, y como símbolo de espera: cuando llega la anoche asoman los secretos del cielo, y permite la auscultación de constelaciones.

Patricio Guzmán has been literally digging up atrocities buried in Chilean history for decades. His films give a voice to some of the world’s most heinous, silenced crimes. The first time I saw La batalla de Chile (Part 1 1975, Part 2 1976, Part 3 1979), The Pinochet Case (2001), and Salvadore Allende (2004) I was horrified by the extent of the crimes and floored by how little I knew of them.
