The James Stanley Brakhage Collection at the University of Colorado Libraries offers researchers a spectacular opening scene; seven folders into Box 1, the files of his correspondence with Kenneth Anger begin, and they continue far into box two – dozens of fat folders stuffed with densely typed letters and handwritten notes spanning 30 years of friendship, much of it on Anger’s cool pentagram or pyramid-and-flying-saucer stationary.

MURDER PSALM BY STAN BRAKHAGE

Murder Psalm is the closest film has come to figuring psychosis. That is not to say that there is anything wrong or sick with Murder Psalm. As Michel Foucault pointed out in Madness and Civilisation, it was the psychiatrists and not the psychotics who fostered the rationalisation and objectification of psychosis as a diagnosis for purposes of power and control. Thus, and in extension of this, I would suggest that the psychosis of Murder Psalm is neither irrational nor unreasonable.

Desistfilm: ocio y furor adolescente en planos que cercan rostros y cuerpos en fragmentos dentro de la atmósfera de la estridencia de un piano asincopado, herido, a punto de desarmarse. Los créditos de inicio en fondo negro, que anuncian los nombres de los participantes, en letras trazadas con mano trémula sobre el mismo fotograma, presentados bajo un zumbido que va anunciando el clima del film: muchachos en una casa de campo, dejando pasar las horas mientras intentan sacarle algunas notas a una mandolina o sueltan rastros de un idioma extraño quizás en un diálogo futil.
