A lo largo de su breve filmografía, el cineasta español Víctor Erice ha reflexionado sobre la relación del cine como mecanismo que rompe la realidad, o que la resignifica. Como afirmaba Jean Goudal en un emblemático texto de 1925 sobre el paralelismo del mecanismo del sueño y la naturaleza de la imagen en el film: “…la sucesión real de imágenes en el cine tiene algo de artificial que nos aleja de la realidad. Estas imágenes en movimiento nos engañan, dejándonos con una conciencia confusa de nuestra propia personalidad y permitiéndonos evocar, si es necesario, los recursos de nuestra memoria”.
