Agrupé estos dos films, uno de la sección Encounters y otros de la competencia oficial del 72º edición de la Berlinale, ya que abordan desde diferentes perspectivas y modalidades (uno es un documental, el otro una ficción) el tópico de la sexualidad, y ambos interpelan o problematizan -conscientemente o no- la mirada del realizador o realizadora sobre este objeto de estudio.

Ruth Beckermann’s last film, The Waldheim Waltz, it’s a rotund denunciation of Austrian former president Kurt Waldheim and his troublesome past with the former German National Socialist Party (the Nazi party) but, beyond that, is a profound gaze on how right wing politics are making a comeback in some European nations, and how people have or are basically forgotten crucial parts of the past. In this context, Desistfilm managed to interview her after the premiere of this important work.

For a time now, some European political estates, like Polish or Hungarian, have been giving their version of history, in a scandalous revisionism, even proposing new legislations that claim their innocence regarding any link and responsibility of Nazi horror during World War II. A while ago, media headlines informed about some Polish politicians, denying the existence of concentration camps in the country at war times, or who signaled that there were as much “polish perpetrators as Jewish ones”, distorting the facts and posing a sort of tabula rasa.

La cineasta austriaca Ruth Beckermann recoge parte de este debate político pero lo hace a partir de la indagación de una de las figuras que precisamente hizo ingrediente de su campaña electoral este tipo de blanqueamiento histórico. De la mano de puro material de archivo, en torno al proceso electoral que vivió su país en 1984, la cineasta desnuda en The Waldheim Waltz, las acusaciones en contra del ex secretario general de la ONU y ex presidente austríaco Kurt Waldheim y su pasado nazi.

Dos films de apariencia documental que concentran “su puesta en escena” en la representación del intercambio epistolar: en una, las cartas de Ingeborg Bachmann y Paul Celan son revividas a partir de la oralidad, del mismo acto de ser leídas en una estación de radio actual, mientras que en la película portuguesa, las lecturas de versos y narraciones van construyendo una memoria colectiva de lo sentimental también desde las misivas de dos poetas: Jorge de Sena y Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen.
