ROTTERDAM 2021: LOOKING FOR VENERA BY NORIKA SEFA

Presented in the International Competition of Rotterdam Film Festival, where it received a special mention from the jury, Looking for Venera is a classic coming of age film, with all the necessary components for this genre to work: a repressive home, the castrating father, a submissive mother, a hostile social environment, sexual awakening, an oscillating friendship and an apparently not very expressive character who later finds his place in the world.

Three proposals presented in the online edition of the Rotterdam Festival allow exploring expressive options as results of formal searches, arranged to achieve a sensitive effect from female characters (transporting the myth of Lilith to a cinematographic idea or converting the cast into a form of struggle against disappearance or the ephemeral).

This edition included the section Filmmakers in focus, which has selection of young filmmakers’ short films and which maintain a particular expressive universe. This is how we were able to discover certain works of the artist and documentary filmmaker Angelo Madsen Minax, the Hindu filmmaker Payal Kapadia and the artist, writer and filmmaker Ayo Akingbade, from England. This panorama, this selection, allowed them to ahieve a value of the different works of these young artists, that went through international festivals like Rotterdam, Ann Harbor or Berlinale.

CROSSROADS 2020: UNKNOWN SUBJECTS

In these days of health crisis, Crossroads film festival, organized by San Francisco Cinematheque, offers nine programs for free online viewing, grouped according to different thematic criteria or according to certain expressive motives, although many of them were raised to confront or resignify some common topics in this type of curatorship. This edition, led by filmmaker Steve Polta, promotes in its programs, beyond the viewings themselves, strategies of relation, correspondences or even absences.

I’ve been trying to articulate a coherent piece after watching program 4 of Crossroads Film Festival, a creature guided by the acute intuition of filmmaker Steve Polta. It occurs to me, somehow, that a man of such artistic caliber might be one of the most appropriate people to curate a program as extensive and rich in interactions.
