An abortion, a night gathering of women where they sing and meet around the fire, hallucinogenic potions which are absorbed when scrubbed in the skin appear in different passages of Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, her second film.

CANNES 2019: LIBERTÉ BY ALBERT SERRA

Albert Serra’s Liberté becomes a new semantic for the libertine imaginaries of the XVIII century. In hand with one of the motifs of the tales of Marquis de Sade, to the fantasies of Guillaume Apollinaire, and an installation and play from the own filmmaker, Serra develops in this film a naturalization of the different sexual practices of that particular historical context, to implant them under the shelter of some woods during a whole night and dawn. It’s the practice of decadent cruising for the enjoyment of voyeurists and exhibitionists.

Portrait de la jeune fille en feu es un gran avance en la carrera de esta directora francesa, y que ha demostrado con este film, que compite por la Palma de Oro, que puede ir del drama social y urbano a uno de ambientación de época y salir bien librada, ya que más allá de los géneros o estilos, se está perfilando como una cineasta de universos femeninos compactos y que busca empatar con las sensibilidades de tiempos actuales.

CANNES 2019: LIBERTÉ DE ALBERT SERRA

Liberté de Albert Serra se convierte en una nueva semántica para los imaginarios libertinos del siglo XVIII. De la mano de los motivos de los relatos del Marqués de Sade a las fantasías de Guillaume Apollinaire, y de una instalación y obra de teatro del mismo cineasta, Serra desarrolla en este film una naturalización de las filias y otras prácticas sexuales de ese contexto histórico, para implantarlas bajo el cobijo de un bosque durante toda una noche y madrugada.

Mafias, narcos, una femme fatale, un policía corrupto, búsqueda del botín y un escenario paradisíaco como elementos clásicos de un thiler o policial pero que el rumano Corneliu Porumbiou transforma con un peculiar estilo y sentido del humor. Dividida en actos, que llevan nombres de los personajes, La Gomera muestra dos cosas: a un cineasta maestro en la dirección, y a una afirmación de que el cine rumano festivalero puede ir más allá de su realismo social.

CANNES 2019: JEANNE BY BRUNO DUMONT

I will start with a phrase that is often repeated in this season of Cannes: “this film should’ve been in the official competition”. And it’s that, Bruno Dumont’s Jeanna not only makes an incredible diptych with his last Jeannette, l’enfance de Jeanne d’Arc , but, despite its minimalism and the theatrical diction that unites them, in this new film there’s a more political intention, less mystic, the one of the child Joan of Arc, confronted against the church and the factual powers in XV century France.

CANNES 2019: THE CORDILLERA OF DREAMS BY PATRICIO GUZMÁN

As it happens with Nostalgia for the light, the exploration of territory allows e opportunity for historical metaphor, to deepen in the recent memory of Chile. The Atacama Desert as geography is used to compare the vastness of facts that remain unlooked, and as a symbol for waiting: when the night arrives, the secrets of the sky are uncovered, and that allows auscultating for constellations. The reconstruction of history always seems to be waiting a celestial phenomenon to reach justice for thousands of victims.

CANNES 2019: JEANNE DE BRUNO DUMONT

Voy a empezar con una frase que se repite mucho en esta temporada en Cannes: “esta película debió estar en la competencia oficial”. Es que Jeanne de Bruno Dumont, no solo conforma un díptico increíble con su anterior Jeannette, l’enfance de Jeanne d’Arc , sino que pese al minimalismo y a la dicción teatral que las hermana, en esta nueva película hay una intención más política, menos mística, la de la niña Juana de Arco enfrentada a la iglesia y los poderes fácticos en la Francia del siglo XV.

CANNES 2019: LA CORDILLERA DE LOS SUEÑOS DE PATRICIO GUZMÁN

Como pasa con Nostalgia de la luz, la exploración del territorio sirve como oportunidad para la metáfora histórica, para ahondar en la memoria reciente de Chile. El desierto de Atacama como geografía es usado para comparar la vastedad de hechos que se mantienen aún sin investigar, y como símbolo de espera: cuando llega la anoche asoman los secretos del cielo, y permite la auscultación de constelaciones.
