MEDIA CITY FILM FESTIVAL 2017: ALEXANDRE LAROSE, CAULEEN SMITH

This technical feature in black and white, color and sepia transcends the mechanical feats which in themselves are remarkable. The narrative of space-time, allows for a different perception of the experimental narrative, where the displacement of space is fundamental for recreating this “time of concentration” where the shifts and the placement of the image are something that one is completely aware of. In some way, Larose’s work teaches how to watch again.

“I came to Comala because I was told that my father lived here, someone named Pedro Páramo”. That’s the start of the Juan Rulfo novel, which is a search of a ghostly figure in a town which seems to be a strange representation of limbo. Meanwhile, the questions about the land where the dying live arises, and also the question if the land itself is dying, a land whose blood circulates in form of lava, that from time to time needs to depurate some wounds through volcanos.

El purgatorio de Rulfo une a tres obras de una forma extraña: el fantasma que busca, la tierra que se manifiesta y que observa. Cinco autores que van uniendo hilos invisibles a partir de una especie de meta geología. Todos los participantes de esta leyenda parecen no tener clara su rol, el suelo es lava, el suelo es la realidad.

LOCARNO 2017: 9 DOIGTS BY F.J. OSSANG

Always punk, always noir, F.J. Ossang’s post-apocalypse has no survivors. Everyone’s a victim of other people’s bullets, of their own bullets, of the condemnation of their past. 9 Doigts makes a perfect “black triptych of the apocalypse” with Treasure of the Bitch Islands (1990) and Dharma Guns (2010), both masterpieces of industrial atmospheres, where nuclear waste is a representation of the tragic ambitions of men.

FESTIVAL DE LIMA 2017: WIÑAYPACHA DE OSCAR CATACORA

Afirma a Oscar Catacora como un cineasta con un estilo propio, con una claridad expresiva basada en el dispositivo documental, que recurre a una cámara fija y distante como traductora de un universo natural de profundidades y alturas.

FESTIVAL DE LIMA 2017: FLAVIA DE LA FUENTE, LA OBSERVADORA PROVISORIA

El sonido filmado es el gran protagonista de la mayoría de los films de la argentina Flavia de la Fuente. En vez de ruidosos autos, los protagonistas son el constante golpeo del mar, pasos y ladridos de pequeños y medianos perros que se complementan con un neblinoso mar. Los múltiples sonidos marinos que la directora alcanza a grabar, muestran que la frontera entre el mar y la atmósfera esta delimitada por un sonido plástico, que pareciera romperse cuando la cámara sale del agua a recargarse de oxígeno.

El Mar: presencia orgánica milenaria, temeraria, que ruge sin cesar a manos de la Luna. Lugar de combates, de escapes. Lugar de tránsito y de desapariciones. Universo sumergido que evoca la inmensidad de su naturaleza. Inevitable imagen poética que trasciende la simpleza humana. Como parte de la competencia internacional del Media City Film Festival 2017, se encuentran compitiendo dos cortometrajes que se aproximan al mar desde la experiencia cinemática para evocar nuevas relaciones estéticas con este.
