LOCARNO 2021: LA PLACE D’UNE AUTRE BY AURÉLIA GEORGES

This third feature film by French filmmaker Aurélia Georges draws on classic forms. Being the adaptation of a story by the English writer Wilkie Collins, published in 1873, La Place d’une autre maintains fidelity to the spirit and literary style, which seeks to establish distances and correspondences between social classes, and between the consequences of the economic crisis typical of contexts of war. However, the filmmaker sets the story many years later, in the middle of the First World War, which allows us to evade the Victorian era and places the drama in France.

LOCARNO 2021: THE CASE OF THE VANISHING GODS BY ROSS LIPMAN

The Case of the Vanishing Gods is the new work of the filmmaker, archivist and film essayist Ross Lipman, which recovers the elements of fascination for the archive, reissue and essayistic reflection of his previous works. This time he makes it through a few episodes of a series called The Psycho ward, which is renamed differently for the purposes of the festival. But that is the least of it, what matters here is the way in which Lipman talks about the figure of the double, or the other, here embodied in the relationship of doll and ventriloquist through his constructions and imaginary in the cinema.

The Case of the Vanishing Gods es el nuevo trabajo del cineasta, archivista y film ensayista Ross Lipman, y que recupera los elementos de fascinación por el archivo, la reedición y la reflexión ensayística de sus trabajos previos. Esta vez lo hace a través de algunos episodios de una serie denominada The Psycho ward, y que para los fines del festival se retitula de otra manera. Pero eso es lo de menos, lo que importa aquí es el modo en que Lipman diserta sobre la figura del doble, o del otro, aquí encarnado en la relación de muñeco y ventrilocuo a través de sus construcciones e imaginarios en el cine.

LOCARNO 2021: MIS HERMANOS SUEÑAN DESPIERTOS BY CLAUDIA HUAIQUIMILLA

Mis Hermanos Sueñan Despiertos (My brothers dream awake), the second feature film by Chilean filmmaker Claudia Huaiquimilla, is a fiction inspired by real events that happened inside a juvenile detention center. It is the story of two teenage brothers who live there with other young people waiting for their freedom. In this sense, it is a learning film, but as the director puts it, even more towards the end, it is also a denunciation film, which seeks to generate empathy with the victims of this type of reconversion and punitive policies .

LOCARNO 2021: MIS HERMANOS SUEÑAN DESPIERTOS DE CLAUDIA HUAIQUIMILLA

Mis hermanos sueñan despiertos, segundo largometraje de la cineasta chilena Claudia Huaiquimilla, es una ficción inspirada en hechos reales sucedidos dentro de un centro de detención juvenil. Es la historia de dos hermanos adolescentes que viven allí junto a otros jóvenes a la espera de su libertad. En este sentido, es un film de aprendizaje, pero tal y como la directora lo plantea, más aún hacia el final, se trata también de una película de denuncia, que busca generar empatía con las víctimas de este tipo de políticas de reconversión y punitivistas.

LOCARNO 2018: AL NAHER Y SOUL OF A BEAST

Estos dos largometrajes presentados en la sección de la competencia internacional del festival de Locarno, en su edición 2021, son como dos polos opuestos. Por un lado, reflejan el espíritu ecléctico de la selección, que quiere revelarse como un panorama de obras de diversa ascendencia e intención, además teniendo en cuenta que hay un nuevo director -Giona A. Nazzaro-que quiere darle un toque particular a su gestión. Y por otro, se trata de dos experiencias que podrían graficar también dos tendencias de algunos festivales de la actualidad.

LOCARNO 2018: AL NAHER AND SOUL OF A BEAST

These two feature films presented in the international competition section of the Locarno festival, in its 2021 edition, are like two opposite poles. On the one hand, they reflect the eclectic spirit of the selection, which wants to reveal itself as a panorama of works of diverse descent and intention, also taking into account that there is a new director -Giona A. Nazzaro- who wants to give a particular touch to her management. And on the other, these are two experiences that could also illustrate two trends in some festivals today.

LOCARNO 2021: A MÁQUINA INFERNAL DE FRANCIS VOGNER DOS REIS

A Máquina Infernal (The Infernal Machine) es el debut en la dirección del crítico de cine y programador brasileño Francis Vogner Dos Reis. Si bien Vogner tiene experiencia como guionista, productor e incluso actor en algunos films independientes de cine brasileño (fue guionista de Jogo das Decapitações (2013), de Sergio Bianchi; O Último Trago (2016), de Pedro Diógenes, Luiz Pretti y Ricardo Pretti; and Os Sonâmbulos (2018), de Tiago Mata Machado), esta es una primera muestra incursión en la dirección que permite conocer cuáles son esas filias o motivaciones, aquí asociadas a códigos del cine de género (el cine de terror más conceptual), liado a una crítica social desde el mundo obrero automatizado.

LOCARNO 2021: A MÁQUINA INFERNAL BY FRANCIS VOGNER DOS REIS

A Maquina Infernal (The Infernal Machine) is the directorial debut of the Brazilian film critic and programmer Francis Vogner Dos Reis. It is also one of the few Latin American shorts seen in this 74th edition of the Locarno Film Festival. Although Vogner has experience as a screenwriter, producer and even actor in some independent Brazilian films (he was a screenwriter for Jogo das Decapitações (2013), by Sergio Bianchi; O Último Trago (2016), by Pedro Diógenes, Luiz Pretti and Ricardo Pretti; and Os Sonâmbulos (2018), by Tiago Mata Machado), this is a first foray into direction that allows us to know what those affiliations or motivations are, here associated with codes of genre cinema (the most conceptual horror cinema), bundled to a social critique from an automated working-class world. The thing is, Vogner comes off fine.

LOCARNO 2021: ATLAS DE NICCOLÒ CASTELLI

Atlas es el segundo largometraje del cineasta italiano Niccolò Castelli, y que concentra toda tu estructura en dar vida al retrato de Allegra, una joven que ha sufrido la pérdida de unos amigos durante un ataque terrorista. El film está construido de tal manera, debido al uso de diversos flashbacks, que la culpa, el trauma y el luto se unen a la sospecha, la desconfianza y una postura xenófoba del personaje principal, prejuicios que poco a poco se van despejando.
