FESTIVAL DE LIMA 2017: FLAVIA DE LA FUENTE, LA OBSERVADORA PROVISORIA

El sonido filmado es el gran protagonista de la mayoría de los films de la argentina Flavia de la Fuente. En vez de ruidosos autos, los protagonistas son el constante golpeo del mar, pasos y ladridos de pequeños y medianos perros que se complementan con un neblinoso mar. Los múltiples sonidos marinos que la directora alcanza a grabar, muestran que la frontera entre el mar y la atmósfera esta delimitada por un sonido plástico, que pareciera romperse cuando la cámara sale del agua a recargarse de oxígeno.

As in Gradual Speed, of of his latest works, the artist and filmmaker Els van Riel explores the diverse mechanisms of light as a physical and optical effect, in its specificity and materiality. In her Fugue, a Light’s Travelogue (Belgium, 2017), presented in Media City Film Festival, she elaborates a proposal of a story of light from its reverse, the phantasmagoric effect of shadows, light games and ghosts that surge from the darkness.

It’s difficult not to feel shaken by the images of red flowers fenced by metal barb wires in Jennifer Saparzadeh’s last film Nu Dem. The transient feel of communities fleeing home through the Balkan Route is an image cinema has not been unaware of, but the nakedness of everyday coexistence, of a mass of humanity trying to reach Western Europe to survive, unaware if freedom or rejection awaits them, it’s specially disturbing in this kind of diary-film.

Presentada en la competencia de ficción del 21° Festival de Cine de Lima, La Región Salvaje es la mejor película de Amat Escalante, porque precisamente escapa al efectismo, al golpe de violencia gratuito y a cierta fórmula festivalera sobre el paradigma latinoamericano de sus anteriores films. Se percibe como gran favor su huida del mensaje aleccionador de un estado mexicano criminalizado, virulento y enfermo, para esta vez centrarse en un doble triángulo amoroso, donde el deseo va mutando de protagonistas, donde las fuerzas vitales lucen poderosas y agresivas.

In the framework of their last masterclass in Lima, in the context of Al Este de Lima Film Festival, some of us Desistfilmers had a chance to enjoy lunch and a nice conversation with Austrian film maverick Peter Tscherkassky and American avant-garde filmmaker Eve Heller, one of the most talented couples in the experimental film world working today. In a relaxed friendly meeting, we talked about their work, their ideas on cinema and other things regarding the current status of the film universe.
