LOCARNO 2021: A TÁVOLA DE ROCHA DE SAMUEL BARBOSA

Samuel Barbosa se acerca a la figura de Paulo Rocha desde la más transparente admiración. En este film hay viajes, cartografías, anécdotas de rodaje, reflexiones sobre el acto de filmar, sobre la materialidad que encarnan los personajes, sobre la insensibilidad de los nuevos tiempos, todo desde la visión de un cineasta ya ausente. Asoman memorias recuperadas, pero también el deseo del homenaje, de mostrar las particularidades de un genio como Paulo Rocha, cineasta portugués revalorado en los últimos años, sobre todo por jóvenes y viejos espectadores que descubren sus obras a partir del interés de festivales de cine, -y esta vez- como el de Locarno.

LOCARNO 2021: GERDA AND LUZIFER

Gerda obtained recognition for her protagonist as best actress and Luzifer caused expectation because it arrived with the patronage of Ulrich Seidl. Both works of young filmmakers seen in the international competition of the Locarno festival, are in line with the type of films that attract the attention of some programmers, based on their stories, which could be considered as striking in these events: a teenager as pole dancer while studying and taking care of her mother during the day, or a strange and fanatic family that lives isolated from the world. Beyond the gimmicky synopses, we were faced with irregular films, which left us with some unease.

LOCARNO 2021: GERDA Y LUZIFER

Gerda obtuvo un reconocimiento a su protagonista como mejor actriz y Luzifer causó expectativa porque llegaba con el padrinazgo de Ulrich Seidl. Ambos trabajos de cineastas jóvenes vistos en la competencia internacional del festival de Locarno, están en la línea del tipo de películas que llaman la atención en algunos programadores, al partir de algunos tópicos que se podrían considerar como llamativos en estos eventos: una adolescente como pole dancer mientras de día estudia y cuida a su madre o sobre una familia extraña y fanática que vive aislada del mundo. Más allá de las sinopsis efectistas, estuvimos ante films irregulares, que nos dejaron con alguna desazón.

LOCARNO 2021: ESPÍRITU SAGRADO DE CHEMA GARCÍA IBARRA

Encontramos en Espíritu sagrado una concreción del universo visual y de ficción que fascina al cineasta español Chema García Ibarra. Códigos de la ciencia ficción “folletinesca”, de imaginarios ufológicos y paranormales en una gama extravagante, y seres ordinarios alienados a un modo de percibir el mundo, que puede ser monstruoso, pero que casi nadie quiere ver. Esta vez estamos en la comunidad de Elche, al sur de España, cuya fisonomía remite muy bien a un entorno pueblerino presto a las nostalgias vintage o para ubicarnos en un periodo impreciso, liminal, donde las fantasías y creencias se convierten en posverdades, en certezas que hay que proteger.

LOCARNO 2021: ESPÍRITU SAGRADO BY CHEMA GARCÍA IBARRA

We find in Espíritu sagrado (Sacred Spirit) a concretion of the visual and fictional universe that fascinates the Spanish filmmaker Chema García Ibarra. Codes of “folkloric” science fiction, of ufological and paranormal imaginary in an extravagant range, and ordinary beings alienated to a way of perceiving the world, which can be monstrous, but almost nobody wants to see. This time we are in the community of Elche, in the south of Spain, whose physiognomy refers very well to a village environment akin to vintage nostalgia which invites us to place ourselves in an imprecise, liminal period, where fantasies and beliefs become post-truths, certainties to be protected.

LOCARNO 2021: LA PLACE D’UNE AUTRE DE AURÉLIA GEORGES

Este tercer largometraje de la cineasta francesa Aurélia Georges se nutre de las formas clásicas. Siendo la adaptación de un relato del escritor inglés Wilkie Collins, publicado en 1873, La Place d’une autre mantiene fidelidad al espíritu y estilo literario, que busca establecer distancias y correspondencias entre clases sociales, y entre las consecuencias de la crisis económica propia de contextos de guerra. Sin embargo, la cineasta ambienta la historia muchos años después, en medio de la Primera Guerra Mundial, lo que permite evadir la época victoriana y situar el drama en Francia.

LOCARNO 2021: LA PLACE D’UNE AUTRE BY AURÉLIA GEORGES

This third feature film by French filmmaker Aurélia Georges draws on classic forms. Being the adaptation of a story by the English writer Wilkie Collins, published in 1873, La Place d’une autre maintains fidelity to the spirit and literary style, which seeks to establish distances and correspondences between social classes, and between the consequences of the economic crisis typical of contexts of war. However, the filmmaker sets the story many years later, in the middle of the First World War, which allows us to evade the Victorian era and places the drama in France.

LOCARNO 2021: THE CASE OF THE VANISHING GODS BY ROSS LIPMAN

The Case of the Vanishing Gods is the new work of the filmmaker, archivist and film essayist Ross Lipman, which recovers the elements of fascination for the archive, reissue and essayistic reflection of his previous works. This time he makes it through a few episodes of a series called The Psycho ward, which is renamed differently for the purposes of the festival. But that is the least of it, what matters here is the way in which Lipman talks about the figure of the double, or the other, here embodied in the relationship of doll and ventriloquist through his constructions and imaginary in the cinema.

The Case of the Vanishing Gods es el nuevo trabajo del cineasta, archivista y film ensayista Ross Lipman, y que recupera los elementos de fascinación por el archivo, la reedición y la reflexión ensayística de sus trabajos previos. Esta vez lo hace a través de algunos episodios de una serie denominada The Psycho ward, y que para los fines del festival se retitula de otra manera. Pero eso es lo de menos, lo que importa aquí es el modo en que Lipman diserta sobre la figura del doble, o del otro, aquí encarnado en la relación de muñeco y ventrilocuo a través de sus construcciones e imaginarios en el cine.

LOCARNO 2021: MIS HERMANOS SUEÑAN DESPIERTOS BY CLAUDIA HUAIQUIMILLA

Mis Hermanos Sueñan Despiertos (My brothers dream awake), the second feature film by Chilean filmmaker Claudia Huaiquimilla, is a fiction inspired by real events that happened inside a juvenile detention center. It is the story of two teenage brothers who live there with other young people waiting for their freedom. In this sense, it is a learning film, but as the director puts it, even more towards the end, it is also a denunciation film, which seeks to generate empathy with the victims of this type of reconversion and punitive policies .
