CINÉMA DU RÉEL 2018: LOS ÁRBOLES DE MARIANO LUQUE

Los árboles (2017) es el primer largometraje documental de Mariano Luque, y por esa razón figura en la competencia de óperas primas de Cinéma du Réel. Pero en sentido estricto es el tercer filme de esa duración del director argentino, quien es una de las figuras más destacadas del cine de la provincia de Córdoba, junto con Rosendo Ruiz –nacido en San Juan–, Santiago Loza y Matías Lucchesi, entre otros.

CINEMA DU REEL 2018: LAS FUERZAS, DE PAOLA BUONTEMPO Y OPTIMISM DE DEBORAH STRATMAN

Las fuerzas es una película muy cercana al cine de Manuel Abramovich, especialmente a Soldado. Ambas películas están interesadas en registrar un proceso de aprendizaje a través del tiempo, con la diferencia que la película de Buontempo es más el retrato del proceso que el retrato de un personaje

CINÉMA DU RÉEL 2018: JENY303 BY LAURA HUERTAS MILLÁN AND THE WHITE ELEPHANT BY SHURUQ HARB

Laura Huertas Millán’s Jeny303 and Shuruq Harb’s The White Elephant, (both part of the short film competition in Cinéma du Reel) are films realized by female artists and filmmakers, about identity political issues. In the first case, the film owes its existence to a malfunction of the 16mm camera used in the film. This is the kind of accidents that fascinated the surrealists, and the filmmaker chose to include the result.

CINÉMA DU RÉEL 2018: CENTRAL AIRPORT THF DE KARIM AÏNOUZ

Central Airport THF (Zentralflughafen THF, 2018) es una película sobre el aeropuerto de Tempelhof, en Berlín. Fue reconocido como tal en 1923 y el régimen nazi lo desarrolló hasta hacer de la terminal el edificio más grande del mundo. Ocupado por los estadounidenses y transformado en base militar luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fue utilizado para el puente aéreo que abasteció a la parte occidental de la ciudad cuando la Unión Soviética impidió el acceso terrestre y fluvial, en 1948. El aeropuerto fue cerrado en 2008 y se convirtió en un parque en 2010. Pero desde 2015 cumple también otra función: se estableció allí un campamento que alberga refugiados recién llegados a Alemania.

Jeny303, de Laura Huertas Millán, y The White Elephant, de Shuruq Harb, que forman parte de la competencia internacional de cortos de Cinéma du Réel, son filmes realizados por mujeres que son cineastas y artistas, sobre problemas políticos de la identidad. En el primer caso, la película debe en parte su existencia a una falla de la cámara de 16 mm. Es el tipo de accidentes que fascinaban a los surrealistas, y la realizadora decidió incluir el resultado.

CINÉMA DU RÉEL 2018: THE TREES BY MARIANO LUQUE

The Trees (2017) is the first documentary long feature by Mariano Luque, and thus, it figures in the competition of feature films of Cinéma du Réel. But in a strict sense, this is the third film of this duration of the Argentinian filmmaker, who is one of the most prominent figures of the province of Córdoba, together with Rosendo Ruiz –born in San Juan-, Santiago Loza and Matías Lucchesi, among others. Luque was in the festivals of Berlin and San Sebastian with Salsipuedes (2011) –and its short version in Cannes Cinéfondation-; with Another Mother (2017) he participated in Rotterdam, and with both in BAFICI.

CPH-DOX 2018: BISBEE ’17 BY ROBERT GREEN

American documentary filmmaker Robert Green keeps in Bisbeee’ 17 –which is competing in the official section of CPH:DOX- the line between non-fiction, docudrama and testimony, all trademarks of his previous works. But this time, he proposes a generational and political reading on an underground event in American history, the deportation of more than a thousand syndicalists in Bisbee, Arizona, in 1917, as a product of an arbitrary system of work in a mining community.

El documentalista estadounidense Robert Green mantiene en Bisbee’17 -que compite en CPH:DOX en la sección oficial- la línea entre no ficción, docudrama y testimonios de sus anteriores trabajos. Pero esta vez propone una lectura generacional y política sobre un evento soterrado de la historia de EE.UU:, la deportación de más de mil sindicalistas en Bisbee, Arizona, en 1917, como producto de un sistema arbitrario de trabajo en una comunidad minera.

¿Cómo podemos evaluar la programación de un festival? Diversidad, cantidad de grandes películas o mínimamente solventes. En comparación con el año pasado, todo estos ingredientes no son parte de una receta, sino más bien es una forma de aferrarse a ciertos criterios, aunque estos sean un poco arbitrarios. En este texto me enfocaré en nombrar algunos títulos que no tuvieron su respectiva crítica en Desistfilm durante la cobertura, y en el diálogo que se mantuvo entre secciones y películas.

CPH-DOX 2018: THE DISTANT BARKING OF DOGS BY SIMON LERENG WILMONT AND JANE BY BRETT MORGEN

The Distant Barking of Dogs (2017), awarded in Amsterdam’s IDFA, and winner of the Golden Alexander and the Critics’ Prize in Thessaloniki, and Jane (2017), which participated in the same Dutch festival and was awarded the Critics’ Choice Award for best documentary, are prime examples of modalities of representations that still dominate these kind of films nowadays, despite the problems they represent.
