Para empezar, O quinto evanxeo de Gaspar Hauser no busca una interpretación del supuesto hecho histórico en sí ni mucho menos hacer una versión contemporánea del personaje arrojado al mundo luego de haber estado en enclaustrado de por vida desde su nacimiento (datos que son mencionados en el comienzo de la película a través del texto o narración: Gaspar Hauser como leyenda y su identidad como enigma).

Bajo el ojo de una cámara que sigue a los personajes desde la inmediatez y la textura del digital, Bill Mousoulis apuesta por una ficción enmarcada en la actual crisis económica griega, y más que un telón de fondo se convierte en el “spleen” del protagonista, un viejo cineasta italiano a la manera de los héroes del registro y la crítica social, atraído por el caos político y los disturbios en Atenas, alejado de la familia y demás lazos de filiación.
